Say Dat: Creating Mantras & Affirmations

“Damn! Now why didn’t ____ happen for me? I must really not be ___ enough.”

*RECORD SCRATCH*

Hol’up, hol’up, whoa ‘dere!

Do you sometimes find negative, self-limiting thoughts poppin’ up on repeat in your head? Have you even gone so far as *gasp* verbalizing them? Everyone has experienced a degree of self-doubt at some point, but it’s critical to your well-being and spirit to become self-aware enough to not only notice the pattern, but work on correcting it as well.

Think about it for a second, you definitely wouldn’t say those things to your good sis or allow her to say and believe them about herself. So, why doesn’t it apply to you? And if you would say them to her, then we need to have a chat with you. And by we, we mean your real-life therapist.

If we are co-creators of our lives, and our lives are a manifestation of our thoughts, you are quite literally what you think and you will ultimately receive what you believe you deserve. If negativity is on loop, that is what will come to consciousness because that’s all you’re thinking and speaking of, acting on, and coming from. In turn, this signals the Universe to usher more of it into your life. Yes, more of the shit that doesn’t serve you. And tbh, ain’t nobody got time for any more negativity. If you do, this message will surely get lost on you, but keep reading girl.

What’s really dope is you can reprogram your subconscious and change your self-talk. Enter positive affirmations and mantras. You’re probably somewhat familiar with them both, but a quick Google search (cuz we love to Google) defines them as follows:

  • Positive Affirmations - (noun) brief phrases, repeated frequently, which are designed to encourage positive, happy feelings, thoughts, and attitudes

  • Mantra - (noun) a word or sound repeated to aid concentration during meditation, a statement or slogan with spiritual meaning repeated frequently.

By consistently repeating positive affirmations or mantras AND believing them, you are able to take control and change the way you think. We naturally assume we are always in control of our thoughts, when it is actually our subconscious. Because if we were, the negativity wouldn’t make it’s way to our conscious mind often or at all. And since you are whatever you think by declaring, “I am…,” why not swerve to the positive lane and ride out?

Once you begin to change how and what you think, your actions will follow and BOOM, you’ve created a new you and a new life.

It’s important for your affirmations and mantras to be personal and specific when you craft them. Consider:

  • What you want to change

  • Using the present tense of, “I am.”

  • Evoking emotion

  • Turning a negative into a positive

  • Repeating daily, at least

If your phone is often glued to your hand or your smartwatch keeps you continuously plugged in, iShallBe will deliver motivation wherever you are and possibly right when you need it. If you’re going to talk yourself into anything, it might as well be positive, uplifting and worthy of your highest-self, right girl?
